Better Bring the Kids this Saturday Saturday, November 8th from 11am-2pm Join our favorite college mascot, Chip the Buffalo and his Kids Club to make Buff Barrels and spirit signs to show off your University of Colorado pride! Chip will be here in person to visit with hi young friends from 12 noon to 1pm. Chip's Kids Club is free for kids in the 8th grade or younger. You can join online or simply stop by the store on Saturday to join.
Another reason to bring the kids is because we’ll also have a few of our favorite feathered and furry friends back in the store for a petting zoo visit! Petunia and Alfafa, young kids born this summer to their mama pygmy goat, Daisy, will be here for their McGuckin debut.
It will also be a great opportunity to come and see the CU Engineering team's gas and ethanol eco-cars, and what they are working on this year for the Shell Eco-Marathon. Each year a team of senior undergraduates puts the pedal to the metal to figure out how to build the most energy efficient vehicles possible. With a simple lawnmower engine, some components found in our store, lots of hard work and ingenuity, these students continue to excel year after year. Last year, the group took second place in Houston with a car that exceeded 1,767 mpg! Even if you aren't interested in cars, bring yourself, bring the kids...we're sure that you'll be impressed by what these young engineers have created.

Festival of Trees November 23rd through December 18th McGuckin Hardware will participate in this year’s Festival of Trees, offering six hardware-themed trees adorned with gift-able products that can be won in a raffle to benefit local non-profit Meals on Wheels.
Meals on Wheels (MoW) is known for community hunger initiatives, including delivering 250 hot, nutritious meals a day to Boulder residents who are not able to prepare food for themselves.
“In addition to the goodness of the meal, our clients appreciate a daily knock on the door and a warm smile when our volunteer arrives with lunch,” said Lory Howlett, event coordinator for Meals on Wheels.
Melanie Atchison, an inventory control specialist for McGuckin Hardware, has been volunteering for MoW for over five years, bringing hot meals to clients during her Friday lunch breaks.
“I think it’s a great program,” Melanie said. “It’s not only about getting them food, but having interaction on a regular basis. I think the families appreciate it, because there’s someone checking in on their loved ones daily.”
Melanie had previously volunteered with her mom at the Fort Collins Meals on Wheels, and that’s how she got involved with the Boulder program.
“I was looking for something else to do to give back,” she said. “I feel like I get as much out of it as I put in, seeing people every week and making sure they feel good.”
Festival of Trees provides another great opportunity for MoW to partner with local merchants to generate donations during the holiday season. This is Meals on Wheels’ ninth annual Festival of Trees and the largest merchant participation to date, including businesses from the Village Shopping Center, Pearl Street Mall and Water Street.
“I think it’s a good, different way of raising funds for services that help so many people right here in Boulder,” Melanie said. “The community involvement is really rewarding for everyone involved.”
Trees will be on display in their respective businesses and open for bidding from Sunday, November 23rd until noon on Thursday, December 18.
McGuckin Hardware will put a twist on the traditional MoW artificial tree display, offering six trees made entirely from hardware items to be stationed in different departments throughout the store. The unique trees will highlight the store’s support of the creative “Maker culture,” as well as contain generous products that are included in the biddings.
Raffle tickets can be purchased online at the MoW website for $5 per entry, and winners will be announced at the MoW holiday party on Friday, December 19th.
McGuckin Hardware will hold a lighting ceremony event in the store Sunday, November 23rd, with special guests.
